World Diabetes Day was marked for the first time on 14 November 1991 at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Federation (FID). It became the official day of the United Nations World Diabetes 2007.

According to a preliminary study conducted in May 2013 by the Romanian Society of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases, the number of diabetics in the country increased by 30% over the past two years and most of those who suffer from this condition are over 45 years old. This year, at Ploiesti, there were made about 241 free glucose screenings. The event was held at Casa Sindicatelor, and the majority of those tested were elderly people.

Ill or not, they were carefully consulted by the nurses and received advice on how to prevent or control the disease from the members of the Association of Diabetics Prahova. Lions members distributed flyers containing information about the disease, how we can prevent, keep control, detected in time, to everybody present.

The objectives of this screening were:

-helping at local / national / worldwide level diabetics; -increasing life expectancy and quality of life of diabetes patients through their guidance, if not aware of, to a specialist; -getting recognition as a public utility; -maintaining regular contact with national and international organizations on the organization and work strategy for the future; -collaboration with institutions and private and public law, including E & P of central and local administration, and other institutions.

This year, Lions Club Ploiesti brought something new to this event and organized a raffle in which order-tickets of those tested were drawn by lot. Prizes were packages with Glucose Testing Machines and tests/syringes.

Between the hours 18 and 20, a facade of an imposing building in Ploiesti was illuminated in blue color, symbol of the fight against diabetes. Blue color represents the sky that unites all nations, and the United Nations flag.

We are glad of the increasing amplitude of this event in Prahova County, and we, Lions members have been and are part of this project, through which we serve the community!
